Asda has announced it is extending its budget Smart Price and Farm Stores ranges into all stores.

The supermarket currently stocks 150 Smart Price and Farm Stores products in 300 stores, with prices as low as 20p for a 500g pack of spaghetti and 39p for a jar of bolognese pasta sauce.

But now all 200 products will be made available online and in all 581 stores.

The move comes after criticism from food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe, who highlighted the lack of availability of Smart Price and other supermarket budget products, saying rising inflation is having a disproportionate impact on poorer households.

Meg Farren, Asda’s chief customer officer, said: “We want to help our customers’ budgets stretch further and have taken on board the comments about the availability of our Smart Price range made by Jack Monroe.

"We are taking steps to put our full Smart Price and Farm Stores ranges in store and online to make these products as accessible as possible.”

The supermarket has already added 100 Smart Price and Farm Stores products to its website this week, increasing the total online range to 187 products. This will rise to 200 by the end of February, with all 200 value range products in stores by March 1.

Jack has welcomed the retailer's swift response. Sharing news of Asda's cheap food promise, she tweeted: "Well, that went rather well."
